Scottish bodies promote electrical apprenticeships

Scottish electrical bodies are directing school leavers towards modern apprenticeships. SELECT, SJIB, and SECTT have highlighted training routes ahead of August’s exam results.

SELECT, the Scottish Joint Industry Board, and the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust are encouraging Scottish school leavers to consider electrical apprenticeships as they receive their exam results.

Nearly 150,000 learners are due to discover their grades on 4 August, and the three electrotechnical organisations have identified the electrical installation Modern Apprenticeship as a route into work across construction, energy, transport, renewables, electric vehicle infrastructure, and smart systems.

SELECT represents electrical contracting companies in Scotland, while the Scottish Joint Industry Board, or SJIB, regulates employer and employee relations within the sector. SECTT delivers the Modern Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation.

Entry into the SJIB apprenticeship is available through successful completion of the SECTT pre employment assessment. National 5s and Highers can provide a useful foundation, but selection also considers aptitude, attitude, willingness to learn, and suitability for workplace training.

The apprenticeship can take up to five years to complete, combining college based learning, supervised employment, practical experience, assessment, and the development of technical competence.

Apprentices earn while training and work towards industry qualifications without following a conventional full time university route. Employers provide the practical environment in which electrical theory, installation methods, inspection, testing, and safe systems of work are applied.

Catherine Gillon, Secretary of the SJIB, said Scotland’s electrical sector had for several years been the largest single trade employer of apprentices and was steadily increasing the number of female apprentices entering the industry.

Fiona Harper, Chief Executive of SECTT, said qualification requires sustained work and determination but opens routes into a sector experiencing increasing demand across renewables, electric vehicles, and smart technology.

Electrification expands the training requirement

The core principles of electrical installation remain fundamental: safe isolation, circuit design, cable selection, earthing, protection, inspection, testing, documentation, and compliance with applicable standards.

The systems built around those principles are becoming more varied. New entrants may encounter heat pumps, photovoltaic generation, battery storage, electric vehicle charging, building controls, data networks, smart metering, power quality equipment, and increasingly connected protection devices.

Commercial and industrial work can extend into high voltage distribution, standby generation, uninterruptible power systems, motor control, automation, and energy management systems. Each area requires additional training beyond initial qualification and often involves coordination with specialist engineers.

Net zero programmes create work across new installations and existing buildings, many of which have supplies, switchboards, cable routes, and earthing arrangements that were not designed for the proposed electrical load.

Competent assessment is therefore as important as installation speed. An electric vehicle charger, heat pump, solar inverter, or battery cannot be treated as an isolated product without considering supply capacity, diversity, protective devices, fault current, voltage drop, harmonics, and existing equipment condition.

Digital systems add another layer because remote monitoring, connected controls, and automated energy management introduce configuration, communications, data, and cyber security considerations alongside conventional wiring.

Apprenticeship frameworks must provide a durable technical foundation while allowing later specialisation. Training every entrant for every emerging technology at the outset would be impractical, but weak grounding in electrical principles makes future development more difficult.

The requirement for workplace placements also means apprentice numbers cannot expand through college provision alone. Employers need sufficient supervision, productive work, qualified personnel, and administrative capacity to support trainees over several years.

Regional coordination is becoming more formal elsewhere in Britain, including the Hampshire and Solent Electrotechnical Skills Alliance, which brings employers, training organisations, and education providers together around workforce demand.

Scotland’s established SJIB and SECTT structure provides a defined route between assessment, employment, training, and qualification. Maintaining that route requires regular alignment between course content, workplace evidence, employer demand, and changes in technical standards.

Increasing female participation broadens the recruitment pool in a trade that has historically drawn from a narrower demographic. Retention will depend on workplace culture, access to suitable facilities and protective equipment, progression opportunities, and consistent treatment throughout training.

Electrical work remains safety critical because poor installation can create shock, fire, arc, and equipment risks that remain hidden until a fault or change in operating conditions exposes them.

Competence therefore continues beyond the end of an apprenticeship. Qualified electricians must update their knowledge as regulations, equipment, working practices, and system architectures change.

The August results period gives school leavers a decision point, but apprentice recruitment depends throughout the year on employers willing to provide high quality placements. Scotland’s electrification plans will require enough people to complete the full training route and remain within the sector after qualification.
