Aura Power has brought its 49.9MW Grimsby Solar Farm into commercial operation in North East Lincolnshire, with electricity now being exported to the grid while final testing and snagging continue.
The development is located between Aylesby and Healing, west of Grimsby, and is the first solar farm in Aura Power’s portfolio to use tracking technology. Rather than holding modules at a fixed angle, the system adjusts their orientation through the day to follow the movement of the sun and increase the amount of usable solar radiation captured by the array.
Commercial operation marks the transition from construction and commissioning into revenue-generating generation, although the project has not yet completed every delivery activity. Aura Power expects the remaining testing and snagging work to be closed before the site is handed fully to its asset-management team.
Construction began after the project reached financial close in June 2025. At that point, Grimsby became Aura Power’s third UK solar project to enter construction and joined Kemble and Burtree Lane in a growing portfolio of company-owned generating assets.
The project also secured a government-backed Contract for Difference through Allocation Round 5. The CfD provides a long-term revenue framework for the electricity generated while leaving the physical operation of the plant dependent on irradiance, equipment availability, grid conditions and the performance of the tracking system.
Tracking introduces a different engineering balance from a conventional fixed-tilt solar farm. Additional drives, bearings, control equipment and moving structures increase mechanical complexity, but the ability to change panel angle can raise annual energy yield and extend useful production further into the morning and afternoon.
The system also changes maintenance requirements. Tracker mechanisms have to withstand wind loading, rain, temperature variation and repeated movement over the operating life of the plant, while electrical cabling and module connections must be arranged to accommodate that movement without introducing avoidable wear.
Energy yield rather than peak megawatt capacity is the practical measure of whether that additional complexity is justified. A 49.9MW array only reaches its nameplate output under suitable conditions, so increasing the amount of electricity produced across the wider daylight period can materially affect annual production without changing the connection rating.
Aura Power says Grimsby can generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of around 27,000 homes and estimates an annual carbon saving of approximately 25,100 tonnes. Those figures are comparative estimates, but they indicate the expected scale of the plant once it is operating through a complete year.
The project has also incorporated landscaping and ecological work around the generation infrastructure. More than five kilometres of new hedgerow have been planted, with further grass seeding planned across the site. Sheep grazing is expected to be possible once establishment work is complete, retaining an agricultural use alongside power generation.
Aura Power’s project design targeted a 71% biodiversity net gain and included a community benefit fund linked to installed capacity. Those measures sit outside the electrical performance of the plant but form part of the planning and operational package attached to the development.
The solar farm’s grid connection has to manage an export profile that varies continuously with solar conditions and tracker position. At close to 50MW, changes in output can be material at a local network level, requiring protection, voltage control and the connection agreement to remain compatible with rapid movements in generation.
Tracking may also spread some production away from the most concentrated midday period. That does not eliminate the variability of solar generation, but it can change the shape of the output curve compared with a similarly sized fixed array and potentially improve use of the site’s available grid connection.
Operational performance will now depend on more than photovoltaic module efficiency. Availability of the tracker systems, inverters, transformers, communications, protection equipment and grid connection will determine how much of the theoretical solar resource is converted into exported electricity.
The remaining commissioning work is intended to confirm that those systems operate as designed and that construction defects or outstanding items are closed before responsibility passes fully into routine operations. Commercial operation can therefore precede final administrative and engineering close-out without removing the requirement to complete that work.
Grimsby also adds another operating asset to Aura Power following the company’s merger with Verdant Energy in August 2026. The combined business said at the time that it had around 1GW of operating and under-construction solar and battery assets in the UK alongside a substantially larger development pipeline.
With Grimsby now exporting, attention shifts from construction progress to energy yield, tracker availability and long-term asset performance. The plant has crossed the principal delivery threshold, but its first full operating year will provide the firmer measure of how effectively the tracking system converts its 49.9MW connection into annual generation.
