Centrica signs 300MWh Finnish battery toll

Centrica will optimise a 300MWh Finnish battery project from 2027. A partial tolling agreement gives Karppio access to wholesale, balancing, and ancillary-service markets.

Centrica Energy has signed a partial tolling agreement covering the 125MW/300MWh Karppio battery energy storage system in Finland, adding another substantial Nordic storage asset to its optimisation portfolio ahead of planned commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2027.

The standalone battery is being developed at Teuva and was acquired as a ready-to-build asset from Helios Nordic Energy. Delta Capacity is constructing the project, will remain its long-term asset manager, and is developing Karppio alongside the Strioga Family Foundation.

At its stated power and energy ratings, Karppio has a nominal duration of around 2.4 hours at maximum output. The configuration gives the system more energy-shifting capability than a one-hour battery while retaining the fast power response required for balancing and ancillary services, subject to qualification for individual markets.

Centrica will trade and optimise the asset across Nordic wholesale, balancing, and ancillary-service markets. The partial tolling structure is intended to provide a measure of contracted revenue while retaining some merchant exposure, dividing commercial risk between the physical asset and its market operation.

Battery revenue depends on a sequence of decisions rather than simple electricity production. An optimiser must determine when to charge, when to discharge, which services should reserve capacity, and how much state of charge must be retained for contractual obligations, while the owner remains exposed to equipment availability and degradation.

Karppio follows an earlier Nordic collaboration between Centrica and Delta Capacity at the Ånge battery in Sweden. The 70MW/160MWh project entered operation during 2026 with Centrica providing optimisation services, making the Finnish agreement an extension of an established commercial relationship.

Centrica is also building its battery-trading position elsewhere in Europe. In Germany, the company agreed to optimise Zelestra’s 99MW/297MWh Hilgermissen battery, a three-hour project scheduled to enter operation during the second half of 2028.

Both agreements illustrate the growing separation between storage ownership and dispatch. Developers can use tolling or related structures to secure contracted income, while an established energy trader takes greater exposure to power prices and the value available through charging, discharging, and reserve-market decisions.

Finland is already accommodating a rapidly expanding storage fleet. Fingrid reported in February that around 1,050MW of electricity storage had connected to the Finnish power system. Larger assets represented most of the installed power capacity even though smaller systems accounted for the majority of individual installations.

Storage is useful to balancing and flexibility, but its network impact depends heavily on location. Batteries reserve connection capacity in both charging and discharging directions, and a poorly located project can compete with industrial demand or generation for scarce grid headroom rather than relieving congestion.

Fingrid has consequently placed increasing emphasis on directing storage towards parts of the network where it can be accommodated efficiently. Connection design, network studies, and operational restrictions are becoming central development issues as the national pipeline grows.

The same transmission system is preparing for potentially steep increases in electricity consumption. Projects with signed connection agreements include large data centres and electric boilers, alongside wider industrial electrification, creating a demand profile that could change substantially during the second half of the decade.

Higher demand does not remove balancing requirements. Wind generation, industrial loads, interconnectors, boilers, data centres, and batteries all change power flows on different timescales, increasing the value of resources able to respond when production and consumption diverge.

Fingrid’s reserve markets give qualified storage assets several routes to provide frequency and balancing services in addition to wholesale trading. Technical eligibility, however, requires more than the ability to charge and discharge: storage systems must meet requirements covering behaviour during voltage and frequency disturbances, control response, communications, and reliable operation through network events.

For a 125MW project, commissioning will therefore involve testing the batteries, inverters, high-voltage plant, protection, controls, metering, and grid-facing behaviour as an integrated system. Market qualification and commercial dispatch follow the electrical work rather than replace it.

Delta Capacity says it has close to 1,000MWh of storage under construction and is targeting more than 6GWh of flexible assets built, commissioned, and operating by 2030. Centrica Energy reports more than 18.8GW of renewable and flexible capacity under contract across its wider optimisation activities.

Karppio adds another project where the commercial operating model has been established well before energisation. Construction, grid compliance, degradation assumptions, and trading strategy are increasingly being designed together because a technically successful battery with a poor route to market can be as problematic as a strong contract attached to an asset that fails to deliver.
