Iberdrola has awarded contracts worth about €30 million to Basque electrical-engineering suppliers Ingeteam and Ormazabal, splitting the work between battery energy storage linked to renewable facilities in Spain and two mobile substations for electricity-network operations.
Ingeteam has secured €25 million of work on battery energy storage systems associated with renewable generation. Ormazabal’s contract, worth almost €5 million, covers the design, manufacture, and supply of two mobile substations intended to provide temporary support during maintenance, operational incidents, and periods of exceptional demand.
Iberdrola has not disclosed the locations, MW or MWh capacities, battery chemistries, connection voltages, or delivery schedules for the BESS work. It has also not published the power ratings or voltage classes of the mobile substations, so the contract values are known while the precise electrical scale of the equipment remains unspecified.
The two packages address different forms of system flexibility. Battery storage can shift energy in time and provide controllable power at a renewable connection point, while mobile substations allow network operators to introduce temporary electrical capacity where permanent infrastructure is unavailable, under maintenance, damaged, or otherwise constrained.
Ormazabal’s equipment is intended to help maintain continuity of supply under a range of operating conditions. During planned maintenance, a mobile substation can create a temporary route around equipment that needs to be isolated, while during a fault or equipment failure it can provide replacement capacity without waiting for a permanent installation to be designed, manufactured, and commissioned.
The BESS award follows a wider series of Iberdrola storage deployments in Spain. In May the company inaugurated a 58MW/120MWh battery at the Campo Arañuelo solar complex in Cáceres, comprising two lithium-iron-phosphate systems connected to the Campo Arañuelo I and II photovoltaic plants.
Iberdrola said at that point that it was operating approximately 200MW of battery storage in Spain. Earlier projects included the Romeral and Olmedilla batteries at Alarcón in Cuenca, each with around 30MW of power and 60MWh of energy capacity, as part of a broader six-project programme totalling 173MW.
The latest Ingeteam work therefore adds to an established battery programme rather than marking Iberdrola’s entry into storage. What is not yet clear is whether the €25 million package covers complete turnkey BESS delivery, power-conversion equipment, controls, integration work, or another combination of equipment and engineering services across the unnamed renewable facilities.
The supplier relationship also carries an industrial dimension. Ingeteam specialises in power conversion, control, and energy-system integration, while Ormazabal’s portfolio includes medium-voltage distribution equipment and network solutions. Iberdrola has explicitly positioned the awards as part of its continuing relationship with the Basque electrical supply base.
Utilities are competing for many of the same manufacturing resources as storage and renewable developers, including power electronics, transformers, switchgear, protection equipment, specialist engineering capacity, and factory slots. Securing suppliers through repeat procurement can therefore affect delivery risk as much as the initial capital allocation.
Mobile substations are a less visible part of that equipment market, but they provide operational value that fixed new-build capacity cannot always replicate. Transportable units can be positioned where maintenance or network incidents create a temporary requirement, then moved to another site once permanent infrastructure returns to service.
That flexibility becomes more useful as electricity networks carry a larger volume of new generation, storage, and electrified demand. More connected assets create additional switching, maintenance, protection, and reinforcement work, increasing the need for network equipment that can support temporary operating configurations without requiring lengthy outages.
Iberdrola’s wider storage strategy includes both batteries and pumped hydro, and the group has set a 2030 objective of more than 120GWh of cumulative installed storage capacity. That figure is far broader than the latest Ingeteam contract, but it helps explain why storage equipment is becoming a recurring procurement category rather than a collection of isolated demonstration projects.
The technical weight of the €30 million package will become clearer when Iberdrola discloses project locations, battery capacities, substation ratings, and delivery dates. For now, the contracts show storage deployment and network resilience being procured in parallel, with two established Basque suppliers taking responsibility for different parts of the electrical system.
