Aggreko signs 15-year hybrid power deal for Eva Copper

Aggreko has secured a long-term hybrid power agreement in Queensland. The Eva Copper project package combines thermal generation, solar, and battery storage in a large off-grid mining power system.

Aggreko has finalised a minimum 15-year power purchase agreement with Harmony Gold for the Eva Copper Mine project in northwest Queensland, setting up what is expected to become Australia’s largest off-grid renewable hybrid power facility.

Aggreko will build, own, and operate the power system for the project, supplying electricity for both construction and operations. The package combines a 104MVA thermal power facility, a 118MWp solar farm, and a 250MWh battery energy storage system, creating a multi-technology generation platform designed to support a large remote industrial load.

The company said the system has been configured to provide a high renewable contribution while maintaining operational resilience for mining activity. The design also leaves room for further development over time, including potential wind integration and a future connection to transmission infrastructure as the project evolves.

The agreement ties into Harmony’s wider development of the Eva Copper project, which is 100%-owned and moved into construction following a board decision in November 2025. The mine, located near Cloncurry in northwest Queensland, is expected to enter first production in the second half of 2028. Harmony has set out a planned mine life of more than 15 years, with annual production forecast at about 60,000 tonnes of copper and 19,000 ounces of gold.

Beyond the generating assets themselves, the hybrid power system reflects the way remote industrial projects are increasingly being structured around integrated solar, storage, and thermal packages rather than single-fuel generation alone. Aggreko said construction of the facility is expected to support regional employment and local contracting activity in Cloncurry and Mount Isa as the project moves ahead.
