Flatiron closes 0m financing for Boston battery

Flatiron has completed financing for its large Boston-area storage development. Approximately $850 million of commitments support Energizar in Chelsea, where 1,200MWh of storage is planned for commercial operation in late 2027.

IN Brief:

  • Flatiron announced approximately $850m of financing commitments for its Energizar storage development in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
  • The package combines construction and term debt with bridge finance, letters of credit, preferred equity and tax-credit transfer arrangements.
  • Energizar is described as a 1,200MWh battery project with commercial operations forecast for the fourth quarter of 2027.

Flatiron Energy has closed approximately $850 million of financing commitments for Energizar, a 1,200MWh battery energy storage development in Chelsea, Massachusetts, providing a significant funding milestone for a large storage installation serving the Boston-area electricity system. The company expects the project to begin commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2027; the financial close is not an announcement that the battery is energised or supplying power.

The financing spans construction and bridge loans, term loan facilities, letters of credit, preferred equity and a commitment relating to investment tax-credit transfers. Each instrument serves a different funding or risk-management purpose across construction and subsequent operations. The announced approximately $850 million represents financing commitments under these arrangements, not one immediate cash payment, expenditure already incurred or a disclosed final capital cost for Energizar.

Nord/LB, Santander and Société Générale served as coordinating lead arrangers on the lending package, with Investec and East West Bank acting as joint lead arrangers and Siemens Financial Services also participating as a lender. East West Bank is the depositary, while Santander is administrative agent. The preferred equity is provided by funds managed by an unnamed global credit manager, and two unnamed Fortune 500 businesses have committed to purchase part of the project’s investment tax credits.

Flatiron announced the financial close on 15 October, identifying Energizar as a standalone 1,200MWh storage development whose commercial operation is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027. The company expects the facility to be the largest battery installation on the US East Coast once operational. That is a forward-looking comparison dependent on the commissioning of other projects, rather than an established ranking among batteries already delivering power.

A battery system’s rated energy capacity is not the same as its maximum instantaneous export to the grid. The company has stated the project energy figure in megawatt-hours, while a directly comparable export-power rating was not established in the announcement used for this package. Without that rating and the applicable operating restrictions, the precise duration of sustained full-power discharge cannot be calculated reliably from 1,200MWh alone.

Electrical energy is stored electrochemically in battery cells and returned through bidirectional conversion equipment when power is required by the network. Battery modules are arranged into larger units, with controls that supervise individual cell groups, thermal conditions, permissible current and state of charge. Inverters connect the direct-current storage system to the alternating-current network, while transformers, protection equipment and metering establish the interface with local or higher-voltage electrical infrastructure.

An urban battery project also requires careful coordination of grid works, equipment delivery, site access, fire safety and commissioning. The financing announcement does not specify the battery chemistry, module and inverter arrangement, thermal-control equipment or completed interconnection design. Such details cannot be derived reliably from a 1,200MWh energy rating; their selection and operating settings will determine site-specific protection, maintenance and emergency arrangements.

The proposed service is to provide capacity and peaking energy resources to communities reliant on the Boston grid. Batteries can charge during periods when electricity is available and discharge when demand or network requirements make stored energy useful. Their dispatch can support peak-demand management and the use of other generating assets, but the actual contribution depends on market instructions, available state of charge, charge-discharge losses and connection limits.

The financial arrangements reflect the way utility-scale storage projects must combine a construction programme with an operating revenue model. Construction debt provides capital while an asset is being developed; longer-term debt addresses the subsequent operating phase. Letters of credit may back specified contractual obligations, while the equity and tax-credit arrangements introduce additional investors and counterparties. The existence of these commitments does not, by itself, prove a particular level of future battery revenues.

Construction costs, grid works, equipment acceptance and operational revenue occur at different stages of a project. Financing structures consequently allocate different obligations to construction lenders, longer-term lenders and equity participants. Even after financial close, delays in grid energisation or equipment acceptance may affect the expected timing of revenue and debt service. None of the disclosed commitments provides a measured forecast of future plant availability or market earnings.

Flatiron has not named the preferred equity investor or the two Fortune 500 corporations participating in the planned investment tax-credit transfers. Their commitments are distinct from realised tax benefits, and the company has not disclosed the resulting credit proceeds or all counterparty economics. The headline financing value therefore should not be presented as an engineering procurement budget, nor should the tax-credit component be counted again as a separate addition to the $850 million total.

Energizar’s location in Chelsea places a substantial storage development near the load centres it is intended to serve, although local siting does not eliminate the need for electrical connection and operational authorisations. Installation, testing, protection coordination and dispatch integration all remain separate engineering stages between the financing milestone and normal grid service. The next defining milestone will be evidence of successful commissioning against the developer’s fourth-quarter 2027 target.
